The steps in this article should be followed after ensuring that the appropriate firewall ports are open and that you still cannot find your device on your network. If you have a device with an LED screen, you can configure its settings directly. To learn how to do any of this, please refer to this article.
Adding Readers Dynamically
- All Suprema readers are in DHCP mode out of the box. If your server and new device are connected to the same switch, have the same subnet settings which they receive from your switch, and there are no firewalls or antivirus software blocking your connection, your new device will show up in BioStar.
Adding Readers Statically
- If your device is not new and none of the steps in this article worked, you will want to manually reset it. Instructions on how to manually reset your device can be found in its installation guide under the Resetting Network Settings section.
- Installation guides can be found here.
- BioEntry Plus: Ensure both dip switches on the back of the device are in the default OFF position (to the left) > Power the device off > Move the bottom dip switch (#2) to the ON position > power reader back up > move dip switch #2 back to OFF.
- Bio Entry W & X-Pass: hold power button for 3-5 sec’s, power cycle the reader.
- Once you reset your device, it will obtain a static ip of 192.168.0.1.
- Connect your device to a laptop via ethernet directly. Since you cannot use POE here, refer to your installation guide to learn how to power your device.
- Installation guides can be found here.
- On the laptop, search and open Control Panel.
- Click Network and Internet.
- Click Network and Sharing Center.
- Click Change adapter settings in the left pane.
- Right click on the ethernet or LAN adapter you are using.
- Click Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4.
- Click Properties.
- Select Use the following IP address.
- For IP address, enter 192.168.0.10, 255.255.255.0 for subnet mask, and 192.168.0.1 for default gateway.
- Click OK.
- Click Close.
- Search and open Command Prompt.
- Ensure you can ping address 192.168.0.1.
- If you cannot, ensure that your device is cabled correctly to your laptop and that you have completed all the previous steps properly.
- If you can ping 192.168.0.1, you can verify that it is a Suprema device by running an "Arp-a" command and verifying the MAC address starts with 00-17-fc.
You can then either use the BioConnect Networking tool (link: https://support.bioconnect.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006141153-Network-Utility-Tool) or use BioStar to discover the device.
If you are using BioStar:
- Open BioStar Config as an administrator and start your server. The IP should display as 192.168.1.10. If it doesn't make sure wifi and any other LAN adapters that aren't your ethernet adapter are turned off and restart your server.
- Open the BioStar client.
- If you can't connect to the server, click Server Setting and enter the IP of the server. Then, click Save.
- Login with your credentials.
- Click on the Device tab.
- Click Add Device in the task pane.
- Make sure LAN is selected and click Next.
- Select TCP and enter 192.168.0.1. Select your device type in the dropdown menu.
- Click Next.
- Once the search is complete, your device should appear. Click Next.
- If it doesn't appear, click Back and try the search again. If the device still doesn't show up, go through the steps documented in this article on your laptop.
- Select the box next to Device ID.
- Click Add.
- Click OK.
- Click Finish.
- Click on the device's Network tab.
- This tab will look different based on what device you are using, but will always contain IP and server settings. This screenshot is for a BioEntry W.
- If your switch is configured for DHCP, select the Use DHCP option.
- If your switch isn't configured for DHCP, select Not Use DHCP. You have to enter an IP address that isn't being used as well as the correct subnet and gateway for your main Biostar server.
- Next, select Use next to Server and enter the IP address and port of your BioStar server.
- Click Apply in the lower right corner of the window.
- Connect your device back to your main switch. Do not power the device using both 12-volt and POE.
- Open BioStar on your server.
- Click Refresh in the top left corner. Your device should now appear.
