What are biometrics?
Biometrics can most easily be understood when you break down the word into two parts: 1) "bio" which stems from biological, and 2) "metrics" meaning characteristics or measurements (Source: FindBiometrics). Biometrics come in two different forms: physiological and behavioural biometrics. Physiological biometrics are biometrics that exist on the body and are most commonly known as fingerprints, face, eyes, handprint (hand geometry). Behavioural biometrics are unique characteristics of a person that are captured from behavorial patterns such as the way you talk, the way you walk (gait). Both "types" of biometrics change over time hence presenting a more dynamic view of a person over time.
Why should I use biometrics?
There are a number of reasons that companies are looking to biometrics:
Security: Since biometrics are unique and change over time, they can present a more dynamic view of a person, increasing trust and security. It's important to note that not all biometric systems have the same security standards. Systems that have learning components within the algorithm (such as live detection)
Convenience: Keys, passwords, PINS, cards etc. Are fundamentally flawed in that they can be forgotten or lost. With biometrics, you don't need to remember anything but yourself.
Compliance and regulation: There is regulation that requires companies to show that they have taken specific measures to secure data and also provide audit trails of access events. Some regulation even calls out dual-factor solutions (e.g. PIN and fingerprint) as being required. Many of our customers have selected Suprema readers for these reasons.
